Credits.
Every design is our own, drawn from open data that thousands of people make and share. Here is whose work it stands on, and how we credit it.
Map data: OpenStreetMap
Streets, water, parks, buildings and place names come from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0.
We credit it as “© OpenStreetMap contributors · © OpenMapTiles · openstreetmap.org/copyright”: on the packing slip of every order made from map data, in the details of each product page, behind the (i) on the maps in our designer, and here. It isn't printed on the products themselves.
Neighbourhood names we extract from OpenStreetMap form a derivative database, which we publish under the ODbL: neighbourhoods.osm.json. Method: for each city we read the OpenMapTiles place layer at zoom 12 in a 3×3 block of tiles around the centre, keep suburbs, quarters and neighbourhoods inside the city's bounds, remove duplicates, sort by distance from the centre and keep up to 24. Hero cities use our own editorial lists.
Street names, the direction streets run, the share of water and parks, and each city's own-language name form a second derivative database, also published under the ODbL: streets.osm.json. Method: for each city we read the OpenMapTiles transportation_name, transportation, water and park layers at zoom 14 in a 3×3 block of tiles around the centre (5×5 for featured cities), sum street length per name, and bin road segments by bearing in 10° steps. The Street Index, A to Z, Street Compass, In Its Own Script and the map studies are made from it, and are credited the same way.
Some designs use no third-party data at all: The Distance, From Here and Same Latitude are computed from the coordinates in our city list; Daylight and the light in the City Almanac are computed from the sun's position (NOAA solar equations). Dates marked on an Almanac are public holidays and seasons, each checked against an official source.
Vector tiles: OpenMapTiles, from OpenFreeMap
Tiles follow the OpenMapTiles schema (© OpenMapTiles). We copied one pinned snapshot from OpenFreeMap and serve it ourselves, so designs never depend on their servers. Our map styles are our own. Each saved design is pinned to the tile build it was made with, so the print uses the same data you saw. Current build: 20260927_080001_pt.
The database our designs are drawn from, under the ODbL: OpenFreeMap's planet build 20260927_080001_pt, free to download from OpenFreeMap as tiles.pmtiles (the whole planet in one PMTiles file, about 87 GB). Our copy holds some of the same tiles, unchanged: those covering our cities' bounds, plus a one-tile margin, at zooms 9 to 14.
Terrain: the Relief style
The Relief style shades hills from Terrain Tiles on AWS Open Data, made by Mapzen, a Linux Foundation project, from the sources below. Relief designs are credited “Terrain: Mapzen Terrain Tiles (USGS, NOAA, Copernicus EU-DEM et al.)” beside the map credit, and in full here.

Sun Path: how it's worked out
Sun Path draws the sun's way across the city's sky on 21 June, 20 March and 21 December, worked out from the city's latitude with the NOAA general solar position equations.
Times are solar time: the hour dots count whole hours from the moment the sun is highest, not clock time, which depends on the time zone and daylight saving.
Day lengths include the usual allowance for refraction and the size of the sun's disc (the sun counts as up when its centre is 0.833° below a flat horizon). We round them to five minutes and noon heights to the whole degree: hills, buildings and the weather all move the real numbers a little.
Every city is drawn on the same scale, with a level horizon and the zenith at 90°. Cities in the tropics are shown as domes seen side on, because there the noon sun crosses overhead during the year. North of about 65.7° (and south of −65.7°) the summer sun doesn't set and the winter sun doesn't rise.
No map data is used, so the design carries no map credit.

The blank products in our mockups (tees, sweatshirts, totes, mugs, the room) are images we generated for this shop. Your design is placed on them in your browser; nothing in them is printed.
